BE PRESENT. BE COUNTED.

ROLL CALL is Kristin Leong's 2017 TED-Ed Innovation Project. Through portrait photography and two simple questions, ROLL CALL is humanizing the gaps separating students and teachers and celebrating the connections happening in our schools despite these divides. The two questions guiding ROLL CALL:

What do you have in common with your students/teachers?
Does it matter that students and teachers have things in common?

Meet the teachers and students who have joined the call at RollCallProject.com, become a part of the conversation on Facebook, and read ROLL CALL's statement of support for #BlackLivesMatter here.

GAPS SEPARATING STUDENTS & TEACHERS

RACE

Over 80% of public school teachers are white.
The majority of our students are kids of color.

GENDER

Almost 80% of public school teachers are female.
Approximately half of our students are male and visibility of transgender students is on the rise.

SEXUAL ORIENTATION

It's still complicated for LGBTQ teachers to be out at work.
One study found that majority of young people age 13-20 do not identify as "100% heterosexual."

WHAT ELSE?

Religion? Household income? Preferences in music?
Join ROLL CALL on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter and share your thoughts on the gaps we missed.
Or let us know if you disagree with the gaps we included.
We're all about awkward conversations to fuel progress.

THE PORTRAITS

ROLL CALL was inspired by Kristin's 2003 project HALF, which included portraits and interviews of biracial and bicultural Americans. HALF was nominated for a USA Today Outstanding Academic and Intellectual Endeavor Award.

Conversations about identity are complicated and the numbers are staggering. Multiracial is the second-fastest growing ethnic group in America and nearly half of all mixed-race Americans are under 18. While our students are becoming more diverse, representation of teachers of color continues to hover around 20%.

That's where the portraits come in. These are the teachers and students in our classrooms. These are their faces. These are their experiences living these numbers.

These portraits are the numbers made human.

Join us. Meet the teachers and students who have joined the roll call. See their faces. Engage with their ideas on Instagram and Facebook.

All portraits are by Kristin Leong.
